
Choose a swing gate if the ground is level and you have arc room. Choose a sliding gate if the driveway slopes uphill, if there is no room to swing, or if a car would have to wait in the road. Those three conditions settle most of these decisions before cost even comes up.
Cost matters too — sliding gates run 20 to 50 percent more installed — but geometry decides first. A cheaper gate that binds on the slope is not cheaper.

The slope test
Stand at the gate opening and look at which way the ground goes.
Level, or falling away in the direction of opening: a swing gate works. This is most suburban driveways.
Rising in the direction of opening: a swing gate will bind. The bottom of the leaf has to stay above the ground through its entire arc, so the gate ends up hung high with a large gap at the bottom, which looks wrong and lets everything the gate was meant to stop walk right under it. You can swing outward instead, but that means swinging into the road, which is unsafe and often prohibited.
Any real slope at all: slide.
This one test explains most sliding gates you see. They are rarely a style choice. They are what the site demanded.
Room: the constraint people forget
Sliding gates need somewhere to go.
Rolling (V-track or wheel) slide gates run on a track in the ground and need clear space along the fence line roughly equal to the opening width plus a bit of overlap. A 14-foot opening needs about 16 feet of clear run.
Cantilever slide gates carry no track on the ground. The gate is supported by roller assemblies on posts, and a counterbalance tail extends past those posts. That tail is why cantilever gates need roughly 50 percent more length than the opening — a 14-foot opening wants around 21 feet of clear side room.
Cantilever costs more and is worth it where a ground track would fill with debris, sit in a drainage path, or cross a slope. No track on the ground also means nothing to shovel, sweep, or bend.
Measure that side room before you fall in love with a slide gate. It is the constraint that ends the conversation on narrow lots.
Where swing gates genuinely win
Cost. Both the gate and the operator are cheaper, and there is less structure to build.
Appearance. A dual swing gate reads as an entrance in a way a slide gate does not. If the look is the point — an estate entry, a formal courtyard — swing is what people picture.
Speed. Twelve to twenty seconds versus twenty to thirty-five. Trivial on paper, noticeable at 7 a.m. in the rain.
Simplicity. Fewer moving parts at ground level, nothing to clog with gravel or leaves.
Pedestrian access. Easier to add a matching pedestrian gate alongside.
Where sliding gates genuinely win
Slopes. Covered above, and it is the big one.
Tight approaches. Where a swing arc would hit a parked car, a retaining wall, or the garage.
Roads where stopping is bad. If your driveway meets a fast or blind road, a slide gate that starts opening as you approach means less time sitting in a traffic lane.
Wind. A solid-panel swing gate is a sail on a hinge, and in a windy market that cyclic load works on the hinge post relentlessly. Slide gates distribute load along multiple points.
Wide openings. Past about 20 feet, dual swing leaves get heavy and hard to keep from sagging. Slide handles wide spans more gracefully.
What both need to get right
Whichever you pick, the failure points are the same two things.
Posts and footings. A gate leaf is a lever, and its post is what resists it. Undersized posts or shallow footings produce the sag that people blame on the gate three years later. Depth below frost line where that applies, adequate footing diameter, and a post sized to the load.
Compliance if it is automated. ASTM F2200 governs automated gate construction — limits on gaps that could trap a hand, guards over exposed rollers, and a requirement that a slide gate cannot simply topple if a roller fails. Level ground, room to swing, budget matters: swing gate. It is the right answer more often than not, and paying extra for a slide gate you do not need is a common mistake.
Any uphill slope, tight side clearance, busy road, or opening over 20 feet: slide gate, and specifically cantilever if the ground track would sit in a drainage path or on a grade.
